Civic Courage - Good people in an evil time?
Rescuers, whistleblowers, journalists and ordinary citizens sometimes risk everything to help a stranger, an action we generally refer to as civic courage. After many years of research and lecturing on the field, anthropologist Brian Palmer will discuss the subject, which we almost daily may hear and read about in media. Palmer will during his illustrative lecture introduce some of our bravest contemporaries and fallen friends. People whose acts of courage almost touch the mystery of existence.
The Society of International Affairs Gothenburg (Utrikespolitiska Föreningen Göteborg) will be visited by anthropologist Brian Palmer who teaches at Uppsala University in Sweden. He previously held the Torgny Segerstedt Guest Professorship at Göteborg University, and before that he taught at Harvard, where his courses on civic courage and engagement attracted more than 600 students per term and led to the book, Global Values 101. He was voted Harvard's best lecturer and in 2004, he was a summer host (sommarpratare) on Swedish Radio. His website is brianpalmer.org.
This lecture will be held in English.
