UF Malmö warmly welcomes Umut Özkirimli from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) located in Lund, who will be enriching us with insights into current political developments in Turkey.
A special focus will be on the recent collapse of the grand coalition between the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Gulen community which has been running the country since 2002. Some of the questions he will address in this context are: How can we make sense of the growing rift between two erstwhile allies and what are the factors that brought the simmering tensions to the fore? How do the Gezi protests of June 2013 fit into this picture? How will this reflect on the forthcoming elections and what is next for Turkey?
Umut Özkirimli is Professor of Contemporary Turkey Studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), Lund University. He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Copenhagen, a Senior Fellow at Istanbul Policy Center, Sabanci University and a Research Associate at The London School of Economics. He is the author of numerous books and articles with a special focus on nationalism studies and is currently working on his next book, entitled 'The Making of a Protest Movement in Turkey: #occupygezi'.
