Pop has a patron saint, and its name is Etienne. When record collecting geek Bob Stanley and twinkle-toed electronic prophet Pete Wiggs first crossed paths, they were barely old enough to speak. Luckily by the time they met English rose Sarah Cracknell in a Kings Cross Burger King in 1991 they had mastered enough words to convince her to join Saint Etienne. The trio then gave us the cut-and-paste classic Foxbase Alpha, and soon established themselves as chroniclers of London, a starstruck cross between the Pet Shop Boys and Peter Ackroyd. Never standing still, they pioneered folktronica with Tiger Bay (1994), turned icecream-Scandopop for Good Humor (1998), and made the capital into a movie - with their own soundtrack - on Finisterre (2002). Tales From Turnpike House (2005) was widely acclaimed as their most luxurious, emotive, and hummable album to date. Currently working with Tim Powell (Xenomania) and Richard X, their quest for the perfect beat continues.
